”I wonder what the winner craves after that run?”
Of course I go straight to the food talk. But it’s a legitimate question, right? I mean, everyone has their post long run or post race “fix” or “craving.” The hubs always craves salty first, then a whole lotta sweet. This means Cadbury Crème eggs will increase in stock due to his consumption.
I know that Abby goes for the popsicle fix, Skinny Runner (Sarah) is currently getting her post Boston Pizza fix here, SUAR is probably parked at Dunkin Donuts right about now, and Bre will ride anywhere as long as there is a Starbucks Stop somewhere in the ride.
You gotta love the craving and oh does it feel good to satisfy it!
As for me, I think my taste buds are little WACKY when it comes to post run/race. I crave SPICY and SALTY! I keep a bag of WASABI PEAS in my car for that reason.
I know Christin can appreciate that, hehe.
Since I have a bad habit of buying $$ snacks, I thought it might be time to make my own. Craving and Wallet are Happy!
WASABI & SPICE “Pea” Nuts
Ingredients: (adapted from here)
- 1 10oz can green peas
- 1/2 tsp. sea salt and black pepper
- 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. paprika
- 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
- 1 Tbsp Wasabi Powder
- 1 Tbsp Peanut Flour (optional)
- 1 tbsp oil
- optional coatings- roll nutritional yeast or brewers yeast after roasted and cooled.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees and prepare a baking sheet. I lightly coated mine witch coconut oil. Could also use foil or parchment paper.
- Drain peas from can. Use a paper towel to gently pat them, ensuring they're as dry as possible.
- Place peas in a mixing bowl. Add the oil and spices and toss to coat.
- Spread the peas out on your baking sheet (you want them spread out evenly). Place them on the center rack of the oven and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- I took mine out around 45 minutes and added a little more seasoning and then continued to roast for another 10 minutes.
- Allow to cool completely then you are able to store them at room temp. YEA!
I know you have one…..what's your post workout/race/run craving?
Cheers,
LC

Mmmm...
Ha, what a randomly yummy post-run treat you crave! I never would've guessed! For me? There's this local coffee shop called Bagel World that makes TO DIE FOR bagels. I don't know what it is about them, but they are delish. I used to treat myself to one with some light cream cheese even (the horror!) after my long runs when I was prepping for my half last summer. It was the ONLY thing that did the trick after running all those miles. Annnd now I totally want one. Yum. PS. My hubs is a huge fan of cadbury creme eggs too!
I totally crave salty after a run... the other day, I came home and ate a handful of turkey pepperoni and black olives. Eeek.
OH MY GOSH - this is hilarious, just this morning I was at my favorite Asian market and put a can of those SRIRACHA PEAS in my cart... then immediately removed them because they have gluten and many other unnecessary ingredients - and I told myself I'd make my own!! :D this is exciting, really, it was literally a half hour ago. thanks for once again being in tune to my brain - I shall use your recipe as a guide!! XO
hahah my friend and i were just eating wasabi peas this morning at work!!
2:03. holy bazeesus!! and I always crave peanut butter or chocolate milk right after a good run. :) I think my body's just used to the chocolate milk... and let's be serious, I always crave pb. ;)
omg I must make these. I love wasabi peas but they're too hot for me, so I could just put less or leave the wasabi out!!! you're genius!!
I crave sweet...what a surprise huh? :P Haha I love that you crave wasabi peas!!! They look delicious, and your title is so punny!! They always make me crack up! :D
Have a great day Lindsay!
Ok those peas sound really good!
After a run I crave salt -- eggs and buttery toast, or french fries!
Mmmm, hot and spicy peas! I crave pb&j :) LOL.
LOL, I like how you think - straight to the food! We had a friend that always wanted Cokes (no diet, no Pepsi, Coke) after his training days (he was training for an Iron Man). I like pizza (go figure) on days when I've done 10+ miles. Not sure if it's a craving so much as and "I think I deserve that" thing ;-)
I like smoothies...monster drinks...that sort of thing. Fruit ALWAYS sounds good. And then bread ;)
This is a hard one, but usually.... I want the salty stuff! olives, pickles, pretzels...and sometimes fro-yo!
Awesome! I always crave salty stuff after a hard workout!
I am still in shock at how fast that guy ran the race - INSANEEE! I wish I could even run one mile at the average pace he held! Amazing!
These peas look so good - trying these forsure :)
Ooo thanks for this!! I love wasabi peas but the packaged ones have a lot of yucky ingredients- I had no idea you could make your own!
I've been wanting to try roasted chickpeas, but never thought about roasting sweet peas! I don't like wasabi all that much, but I wonder if I couldn't play around with other spices?
it depends...usually i just want to get protein in..so, a big ol' smoothie, or a pb&j sandwich..but lately it's been greek yogurt (lindsay got me hooked), fruit and granola...i then eat this while soaking in an epsom salt bath...pure heavan!!!
I usually want a protein shake or a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. There isn't any real rhyme or reason to it! I am trying to find an alternative to chocolate milk or soy chocolate milk that has the same protein and carbs ratio but isn't as expensive as the protein shakes and isn't dairy or soy lol! I have lots of rules
YUM wasabi peas are one of my favorite things, I'm always curious if they are ok for you or not though?? For some reason i think they are deep fried... these sounds tasty though!! :)
When I USED to run, I always craved COLD (smoothie) and carb (bagels!)
I actually crave comfort foods. Its weird...i really enjoy oats with greek yogurt. Its like a big bowl of love. I used to eat wasabi peas all the time. I definitely tend to be more of the salty and spicy type rather than sweet. I cant wait to make these...looks so delicious. Plus right now Im seeing alot of spring peas at the market! great time to use them up. Have a great day!
peanut butter and oatmeal. and a LARGE diet coke. doesn't matter if it's 5am or pm i want it.
A LARGE banana protein smoothie. Every time!
How cool is that??!!! I love wasbi peas!
I can't believe you made your own wasabi peas! You're a genius!
I was seriously in AWE of how freaking fast those runners finished! Hello, bionic women/men! I can't even run a mile twice the time they were running it (4 min miles?! I mean REALLY. Who DOES that). They are SO good! Hmm...what did I crave after a half...is it bad to say wine? ;-)
I know you must be a salty craver. Am I right? I blame it on the humidity and
sweat loss! haha.

of course! I saw one with cumin and garlic. Or even turmeric. Let me know if
you make them!

i know, i didn't like all the additives either. PLus you can add chili pepper to
these too!

That is so interesting! I'm a little afraid of wasabi! Sometimes I crave a big hamburger after a long run. I don't know why but it has to have avocado on it and that's all I really care about!
seriously!! I could maybe hold that pace for 30seconds. haha. I really wonder
what he had for breakfast, haha.

So creative!!
I tried to get into eating those, but I don't know why but I could not get used to the taste. Maybe I need to try homemade ones :)
And my pre race craving is definitely anything BREAD- pancakes, waffles, french bread, etc...or bowls & bowls of cereal- lol! :)
You are SO creative in the kitchen! Geez.
I have lots of post workout cravings ;-) Anything bready and doughy is a winner, as well as oats or anything sweet. I'm not too much for savory when I'm carb-craving!
Woman, I am all about the oats! I am not a runner, but after working out, I need those crazy carbs like nobody's business!
these look awesome!! i constantly seem to crave cereal! and coffee!!
That looks great! I have been craving cereal horribly lately-prob cause I cut myself off!
oh yes, next time we all need to hang out! too fun!
Wasabi and I battle it out man! I want to love it. and I will keep shoving it in my face. But it totally kicks my butt! =) haha!
This is a genius idea to make your own!!! and they look goooood! =)

I'm not a cooked spinach fan! But maybe someday i'll try a green monster :)
Aww, this looks great! :D
This is a hard question for me because I don't usually "really" workout to exhaustion, and only do short sessions. I'm not at all a salty eater, and will usually crave fresh and sweet - a cooled apple would be perfect! And to avoid the hunger pang, I'd also have some fat and protein, like a piece of chicken breast filet and a mug of tea with cream. (Yes, I *have* strange eating habits. :D)
LOVE this question!!! I crave chocolate milk, yogurt, pb and j sandwich, sometimes pizza and always a cold smoothie:) Hope you are having an amazing day and I am posting your race pics tomorrow afternoon!!
This look so yummy! I am pretty addicted to wasabi and would love to combine it with peas. I just better make sure to eat "sparingly" ;)
that always happens to me. I try to cut back on something then immediately crave
it!

wasabi has to be taken in little by little. Sometimes I mix it with ketchup.
That might help!!

yum, Linds! Nice work. :) Hmmm - I crave salty foods - something with salsa or marinara. Also refried beans. Random and delicious. With avocado on top. If it's really hot outside, all I crave is a smoothie!
I think anything topped with REAL greek yogurt is comforting and nourishing.
Love it! Let me know if you try out the peas, yea!
p.s.
I thought a wasabi deviled egg would be awesome too!

Love the pea recipe!!
What a great way to save $$ and make a GF option! I totally crave protein after a run---turkey wrap or something along those lines!! :)
Have a fantastic week beautiful Lindsay!!
I always crave fruit. LOTS of fruit. And a pumpernickel bagel. Although it's been forever since I've had a pumpernickel bagel (haven't found any good ones around here!). I still always think about it!
2:03...isnt that insane!! After replinishing my fluid ; ) I crave salt or sweet just depending on how much salt I actually lost...ha! Happy middle of the week day, Linds!
Katie :)
Sorry for calling you Linds...you make be like, uh! One of my good friends is Lindsay and it's just automatic to say Linds : )
OH BOY!! I'm going to make peas and chick peas tomorrow!! I can't wait to try it!
The one thing I crave immediately post-race is gluten free animal cookies! But you can pretty much make me ride my bike anywhere for any length of time if there is coffee involved! Apparently cycling and coffee go hand in hand!
I don't do anything really long distance, and usually after a workout my appetite goes to nada... so it's more like "what can I get down right now that won't gross me out?" A thin smoothie works... or something starchy... I think spicy peas would be great for a movie snack, though!
Smart girl!! You are saving a bundle on that stuff I'm sure!
I don't run/race and actually, I agree with S@extremebalance, my appetite is pretty low (shocking and the ONLY time of day I might add) after I've worked out. However if I'm really hungry, sometimes I do crave a really good energy bar like KIND. Mmmm.
peas?? haha linds you are the bomb!! I crave giant salads and a breadstick from my fave restaurant close by, peanut butter and honey sandwhiches, cereal, and frozen yogurt. I think i just love to eat when I know I've burned a trillion calories!!
I just remember how much better you and James made me feel about eating a Cadbury Creme egg last Easter... Thanks again both of you! Yall rock!
Oh deb, I was expecting some UBER DELICIOUS smoothie recipe. I crave
those Perfect Foods Bars all the time but I think its because its mainly peanut
butter/whey protein....with a touch of salt. Maybe I need my potassium checked,
haha.

Sadly I can't say that I 'crave' smoothies! They are just the best tool for me to keep my weight down. Yes, I have to get creative to keep things fun and fresh and yes, I crave some of the toppings: cereal, nut butters, crumbled bars, nuts (not all at once of course) but the smoothies themselves I can't use the word 'crave'! :-)
oh dang, I need to try that one. You had me at soft serve.
