The Big “B” and Reci-“P”

Well Folks, the Big B (Boston) is over and done with. Such a good day for lots of runners out there! I am still baffled at the winners time. Um 2:03??? I’ll have what he had for breakfast please. But this got me thinking……..

”I wonder what the winner craves after that run?”

Of course I go straight to the food talk. But it’s a legitimate question, right? I mean, everyone has their post long run or post race “fix” or “craving.” The hubs always craves salty first, then a whole lotta sweet. This means Cadbury Crème eggs will increase in stock due to his consumption.

I know that Abby goes for the popsicle fix, Skinny Runner (Sarah) is currently getting her post Boston Pizza fix here, SUAR is probably parked at Dunkin Donuts right about now, and Bre will ride anywhere as long as there is a Starbucks Stop somewhere in the ride.

You gotta love the craving and oh does it feel good to satisfy it!

As for me, I think my taste buds are little WACKY when it comes to post run/race. I crave SPICY and SALTY! I keep a bag of WASABI PEAS in my car for that reason.
untitled
I know Christin can appreciate that, hehe.

Since I have a bad habit of buying $$ snacks, I thought it might be time to make my own. Craving and Wallet are Happy!

WASABI & SPICE “Pea” Nuts

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Ingredients: (adapted from here)
  • 1 10oz can green peas
  • 1/2 tsp. sea salt and black pepper
  • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1 Tbsp Wasabi Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Peanut Flour (optional)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • optional coatings- roll  nutritional yeast or brewers yeast after roasted and cooled.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Preparation:
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and prepare a baking sheet. I lightly coated mine witch coconut oil. Could also use foil or parchment paper.
  2. Drain peas from can. Use a paper towel to gently pat them, ensuring they're as dry as possible.
  3. Place peas in a mixing bowl. Add the oil and spices and toss to coat.
  4. Spread the peas out on your baking sheet (you want them spread out evenly). Place them on the center rack of the oven and bake for 45  minutes to 1 hour.
  5. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
  6. I took mine out around 45 minutes and added a little more seasoning and then continued to roast for another 10 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool completely then you are able to store them at room temp. YEA!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I know you have one…..what's your post workout/race/run craving?
Cheers,
LC

Ha, what a randomly yummy post-run treat you crave! I never would've guessed! For me? There's this local coffee shop called Bagel World that makes TO DIE FOR bagels. I don't know what it is about them, but they are delish. I used to treat myself to one with some light cream cheese even (the horror!) after my long runs when I was prepping for my half last summer. It was the ONLY thing that did the trick after running all those miles. Annnd now I totally want one. Yum. PS. My hubs is a huge fan of cadbury creme eggs too!

Heather said...

I totally crave salty after a run... the other day, I came home and ate a handful of turkey pepperoni and black olives. Eeek.

Kristina @ spabettie said...

OH MY GOSH - this is hilarious, just this morning I was at my favorite Asian market and put a can of those SRIRACHA PEAS in my cart... then immediately removed them because they have gluten and many other unnecessary ingredients - and I told myself I'd make my own!! :D this is exciting, really, it was literally a half hour ago. thanks for once again being in tune to my brain - I shall use your recipe as a guide!! XO

hahah my friend and i were just eating wasabi peas this morning at work!!

2:03. holy bazeesus!! and I always crave peanut butter or chocolate milk right after a good run. :) I think my body's just used to the chocolate milk... and let's be serious, I always crave pb. ;)

Christina said...

omg I must make these. I love wasabi peas but they're too hot for me, so I could just put less or leave the wasabi out!!! you're genius!!

Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) said...

I crave sweet...what a surprise huh? :P Haha I love that you crave wasabi peas!!! They look delicious, and your title is so punny!! They always make me crack up! :D

Have a great day Lindsay!

Holly said...

Ok those peas sound really good!

After a run I crave salt -- eggs and buttery toast, or french fries!

Allie said...

Mmmm, hot and spicy peas! I crave pb&j :) LOL.

Heather (Where's the Beach) said...

LOL, I like how you think - straight to the food! We had a friend that always wanted Cokes (no diet, no Pepsi, Coke) after his training days (he was training for an Iron Man). I like pizza (go figure) on days when I've done 10+ miles. Not sure if it's a craving so much as and "I think I deserve that" thing ;-)

Trisha said...

I like smoothies...monster drinks...that sort of thing. Fruit ALWAYS sounds good. And then bread ;)

Angie said...

This is a hard one, but usually.... I want the salty stuff! olives, pickles, pretzels...and sometimes fro-yo!

Gen said...

Awesome! I always crave salty stuff after a hard workout!

I am still in shock at how fast that guy ran the race - INSANEEE! I wish I could even run one mile at the average pace he held! Amazing!

These peas look so good - trying these forsure :)

April said...

Ooo thanks for this!! I love wasabi peas but the packaged ones have a lot of yucky ingredients- I had no idea you could make your own!

Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen said...

I've been wanting to try roasted chickpeas, but never thought about roasting sweet peas! I don't like wasabi all that much, but I wonder if I couldn't play around with other spices?

audrey said...

it depends...usually i just want to get protein in..so, a big ol' smoothie, or a pb&j sandwich..but lately it's been greek yogurt (lindsay got me hooked), fruit and granola...i then eat this while soaking in an epsom salt bath...pure heavan!!!

Erin Stratton said...

I usually want a protein shake or a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. There isn't any real rhyme or reason to it! I am trying to find an alternative to chocolate milk or soy chocolate milk that has the same protein and carbs ratio but isn't as expensive as the protein shakes and isn't dairy or soy lol! I have lots of rules

Dairyfreebetty said...

YUM wasabi peas are one of my favorite things, I'm always curious if they are ok for you or not though?? For some reason i think they are deep fried... these sounds tasty though!! :)

When I USED to run, I always craved COLD (smoothie) and carb (bagels!)

Chrysta said...

I actually crave comfort foods. Its weird...i really enjoy oats with greek yogurt. Its like a big bowl of love. I used to eat wasabi peas all the time. I definitely tend to be more of the salty and spicy type rather than sweet. I cant wait to make these...looks so delicious. Plus right now Im seeing alot of spring peas at the market! great time to use them up. Have a great day!

I was seriously in AWE of how freaking fast those runners finished! Hello, bionic women/men! I can't even run a mile twice the time they were running it (4 min miles?! I mean REALLY. Who DOES that). They are SO good! Hmm...what did I crave after a half...is it bad to say wine? ;-)

lindsay cotter said...

I know you must be a salty craver. Am I right? I blame it on the humidity and

Aww, this looks great! :D

This is a hard question for me because I don't usually "really" workout to exhaustion, and only do short sessions. I'm not at all a salty eater, and will usually crave fresh and sweet - a cooled apple would be perfect! And to avoid the hunger pang, I'd also have some fat and protein, like a piece of chicken breast filet and a mug of tea with cream. (Yes, I *have* strange eating habits. :D)

hungryrunnergirl said...

I don't do anything really long distance, and usually after a workout my appetite goes to nada... so it's more like "what can I get down right now that won't gross me out?" A thin smoothie works... or something starchy... I think spicy peas would be great for a movie snack, though!

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) said...

Smart girl!! You are saving a bundle on that stuff I'm sure!

I don't run/race and actually, I agree with S@extremebalance, my appetite is pretty low (shocking and the ONLY time of day I might add) after I've worked out. However if I'm really hungry, sometimes I do crave a really good energy bar like KIND. Mmmm.
