Check the Freezer

Since we’ve had about 50 days of record heat (over 100F), the hubs and I have gone a little crazy. Well, I am already crazy but I think I lured him into it.

You see, he is still doing his regular training which means 2-3 hour rides followed by a run……
in the afternoon…..
at these temps!!!
P2010001
I can barely take it inside.
I usually end up sticking my head in the freezer for a good 5 minutes to cool off!
P2010016
Feels nice in there, ahhh!

Speaking of freezers, ours has gotten a lot more use these days.

According to THIS article, freezing some of your favorite foods might help lower
your body’s temperature.

So I did what every normal overheated hormonal woman does and stuck our
favorite drinks and eats in the freezer.

P2010009
P2010010P2010012
P2010014
Not your average use for a freezer but hey, it works! I have to say, the frozen yogurt cups are by far my favorite. I try to eat a frozen lara bar or some frozen smoothies in the morning before I teach outdoor conditioning and so far it has worked well. My core temp is cooled off for the time being. Winking smile

Can’t Beat the Heat Circuit

warm up 10 minutes light jog/skips/high knees
  • 10 on each leg- lunge/twist with weigh or medicine ball
  • 10 dive bomber burpees (think dive bomber push up with a burpee after)
  • 10 jump lunges and swing (jump lunge twice with weight overhead then swing med ball or weight to one side like a wood chop)
  • 20 squat hops
  • 20 scissor kicks
  • 10 froggy to plank push up (start in this position them jump back to plank and add a push up)
SideJumpSquat1
  • Repeat 4-5x ( we only got through 4 rounds due to time and it was TOUGH)
cool down with easy spin on bike/stretch

What’s favorite food are you freezing these days? Can you run in 100+F temps.
I bet this “Freaking Awesome” Arizona Runner can!

Cheers to Freezer Friday!

p.s.
Good luck to all those racing this weekend. Lots of luck to Nora and Beth racing Boulder 70.3!!!!

Ok so I just ate and now Im feeling ill! I've never been so nervous! WOW!!!!! My freezer has fruit.. Sorry my brain isn't working this morning! Off to get my wetsuit.

The hubs is hardcore for training in the heat! It will only make him better for early morning races because he is adapted to heat! Woo hoo!!

Jess said...

OMG it's been THAT many days of insane heat?? I seriously think you need to hop a flight up to Boston, it's a gorgeous day, only in the 70s! PS. I always want to try freezing my yogurt cups but tend to forget to give it a shot, thanks for reminding me, I just popped one in the fridge ;-)

On Wednesday I worked the bar at work, which is in an old mill, so of course no AC, just fans... and pretty much the hottest day of the year at 113, and the mill was hotter than it was outside, so I was basically melting. Instead of drinking water I was sucking on ice cubes and I put a peach in the freezer for a little while to get it a little slushy. It was delicious! I also love frozen bananas and grapes.

And just thinking of running/biking in those temps exhausts me!

I'm not working out much in this weather - just a quick run in the evenings sometimes - but I'm coxing a rowing crew that has been out there pushing hard, training for masters nationals three days a week.  We took off two of the 105* plus days to use the rowing machines in an under air-conditioned spot, but otherwise they've been out there getting in the conditioning and hydrating like crazy.  Hopefully all this hot-weather training will give us a competitive advantage over the teams from Minnesota, Cali, etc - since the competition is next week, in Oklahoma City. :)

emily@runningperspective said...

oh my gosh i cant even imagine it being that hot id die!
and freezing food = best idea everr!
i always freeze my bananas, strawberries, and watermelon!
definitely going to try to incorporate some of those moves into my workout today!!!

Allie said...

I about died when Ohio had over 100 for like 2 days, IDK if I could have handled 50!!!!
I havent frozen these in a while, but when I did gymnastics I would freeze my gatorade and my grapes!  I miss frozen grapes!!!
When it is over 82 I dont run outside. I dont handle the humidity well when I workout, so I just skip(bad idea prolly) or work out in my house/go to the rec when Im close by it.

Shannon said...

ooh a frozen larabar sounds awesome.  as does frozen yogurt :)  i'm trying to clean out my freezer in preparation of a move...  but i might have to put a few things back in!!  have a great weekend!

Bee @ B*tchy Bee said...

I love freezing things, or even just putting them in the fridge. Protein/Granola bars out of the fridge are sooo much better!

I love to make popsicles this time of year too. Easiest treat ever! And quite refreshing. I think I will copy you and stick my head in the freezer instead of turning on the AC this weekend ;)

Stay cool! Literally....

Brittany said...

I love that picture of you and the freezer. Seriously..that is one of the best feelings in the world after a hot day outside!! I love the idea of freezing foods that normally wouldn't go in the freezer. I love some basic frozen items like grapes and blueberries. I will be trying the yogurt now! Running in any heat has always made me a wimp. I played soccer for 10years, and every single summer when we would practice I would feel like hell was taking over my insides. If only I had this idea, and a cold water bottle.

Siobhan @ sio 'n the run. said...

What a great idea!! I need to start throwing everything in the freezer! I'm glad we are no longer over 100 here! I was MELTING in that heat!
And that workout sounds hard! Keep staying cool, friend!

Missy said...

I have bags of frozen fruit for smoothies but lately I have just been taking the bag on my lap like it's a bag of chips and eating the fruit like mini popsicles.

Sam said...

i pop frozen blueberries like nothing else this time of year. love the sound of some frozen yogurt cups. i can't believe your hubs is outside training in this texas heat! killer.

Rachelle Wardle said...

Your hubby is a rockstar!  That is some serious dedication and he deserves sometime of medal or something.  Love the circuit, thanks for sharing.

And I always freeze everything!  Frozen grapes are one of my favorites oh and frozen M&M's are hard to top as well. :)  Have a great weekend and stay cool.

Hahahaha your face in the freezer - priceless!  Have a good weekend, friend :)

YIKES 50 days of 100 degree temps?! That is crazy. You guys should come to Maine ;-) It'll feel cold in comparison but lovely! Good luck to your man on afternoon training, and you too! I love the freezer idea, so tasty! I sometimes wonder if Greek Yogurt would freeze well enough to be like ice cream??

lindsay cotter said...

I saw that you were looking forward to 90F heat. I am looking forward to a cool fron that makes it 90F haha. Lets swap, I'm all about that!

Heather @ Dietitian on the Run said...

Haha, head in the freezer shot = awesome.

I saw some articles on this "cold foods" thing, too. Interesting idea, and even if its not effective, who wouldn't want to eat/drink cold things in the heat? makes sense to me!

lindsay cotter said...

yes indeed! the hubs has been downing slurpees before a run. I wouldn't recommend a sugary loaded drink before a run but at this point, I could care less as long as he's cool! haha.

Oops...the fruit bag was not for icing my body, more like I grab the whole bag and sit on the couch (or in bed) with it just snacking away as if it were a bag of chips. Certainly not gonna happen in the winter.

The bar is completely separate from the restaurant, so no cooking in it. Just sitting in it was horrible enough! I've never sweat so much just from sitting down.

Ugh, it's awful isn't it? I don't know HOW your husband does it! I've been freezing my water and coconut water the night before I head out for a long run. It's usually melted with in an hour, but at least it's chilly that first hour! hehe It does make ice baths after long runs a little easier though!

note to self... don't step any nearer the freezer! unless you want to be stuck to it for a good while ;)
