Highs and Lows

I sit here at the airport, about to write a recap of the hubs’ race, travel, etc., and a part of me feels guilty. Like maybe I should be posting a workout or a gluten free recipe. Then I read my blog description. This is life. Life as a pro triathlete’s wife. This is me, this is us! This is Cotter Crunch. And right now, we’re IN SEASON. I do not race, I support. I do not compete, I cheer. That’s my job, and ya know what? I wouldn’t change it for the world. The good days, the bad days, and everything in between.

So like I said, I’m at the airport. Waiting for my flight home, reflecting on the HIGHS and LOWS of this weekend. The lows not being in our control shall soon be forgotten, but the HIGHS will NEVER be forgotten and thank God for that!
Winking smile

the LOWS……..

- paying $200 for a bike box to travel

- having to drop out of the race while still being in top 5. Two flats on the bike and no more spare tires. The hubs was escorted back to transition with this look on his face. Don’t you just want to hug him? Sad smile

When this is your profession, it can be tough to stand and watch as the other pro men finish, but He did. He stood and cheered on his fellow athletes! Now that’s a true athlete (in my humble opinion, hehe.)

DSCF0841

the HIGHS ……..(so many to be thankful for)

- the PEOPLE! Like I said before..so many great people that we got to meet and make connections with. The race directors, the volunteers, other athletes, the locals, etc. (Sue, Tawnee, Krista, Jim, Carrie, Sam… you all know we just adore you!)

- The weather. It was perfect. Blue sky, no wind, lots of sun.

DSCF0844

- For me, just being able to see the hubs race is always a blessing. But this race was different. It was like his mental block was gone and all that hard work and strength was clearly visible. 2nd out of the water and on the bike course.

The hubs is at the end of the video.

- And last but not least, the beautiful Spabettie (Kristina). Her and sweet Basil came out to watch the race and say hello.

How amazing are blog friends? Truly Amazing!
I made her try out the RECOVERY BOOTS as well post race. hehe!

So there you have it folks. The highs and lows of life. But I think the Highs FAR outweigh the lows.
I’ve got more to share, but I think I’ll just soak this in for now. My flight awaits.
Lets hope its smooth sailing yet again. Winking smile

Cheers,
LC

p.s.
The hubs told the airline agent about his race and she waived the 2nd half of his bike fee. That’s good stuff!

That is awesome that they waived that fee! Glad to hear that you think he is doing great although it is a bummer about the tires! Glad you were able to still enjoy your time and not let that ruin it:)

I'm happy I DID get to hug him! and you! so great to meet you two, and I'm just going to say AWESOME JOB on the part of the race he did complete!! he was doing great before things out-of-your-control happened.

I wish you guys had even one more day! safe travels and SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER!  <3

So glad they waived the fee!! So sorry to 1) not have made it 2) to get the recap on his race. Wish we could have been there!! Safe travels :)

Heck yeah! There is more to life than recipes and workouts and I love reading about it.

So true that everything has its highs and lows. It sounds like the hub did stellar in spite of not being able to finish. That's an emotional test for an athlete but it sounds like you've got quite the level-headed guy!

jobo said...

So glad the airline agent waived the fee!! And wow, your husband sounds amazing...to sit there and cheer when you have to pull out of the race has to be incredibly difficult. I am constantly amazed at the strength you both have together in this journey together. You are absolutely two of the most inspiring people I know. By a long shot. XOXO!

Jess said...

Aww, love this post. The support and love just shines through. Your husband is lucky to have such an amazing and beautiful and loving wife! Especially during times like this - that must have been SO FRUSTRATING for him to have to drop out due to the flats, especially since he was having such a good race. The silver lining? That he DID have such a good race even without the finish. Here's to the next race, right?? Save travels!! PS. jealous you got to hang with Kristina!!

Heather (Where's the Beach) said...

I had wondered if you were going to get to meet up with Kristina!! So jealous. I am sorry the race didn't go so well, but glad the positives out weighed the negatives.

Lindsay I'm sorry to hear James had to drop out! But I agree with you that he is a real athlete -- cheering on the other athletes! And I'm glad he got that fee waived too.

You have such a good attitude, I love it! And I'm jealous that you got to meet up with Kristina -- how fun!

Just remember that we are all where we need to be at each moment.  The tides come and go, but as long as we reamin true to who we are and our internal compass, all is well.  It's not always an easy ride or journey, but it's ours and it's beautiful.

In celebration of GF-ness, I made GF zucchini pineapple bread for our yoga teacher training pot luck dinner (graduation!), and set out the extra loaf for people at the studio during the day.  It was received very, very well, and unknown to me, the hub of one of the teachers has Celiac's disease.  She took a bite and responded, "Oh wow! This is REALLY good!  You should have a bite!"  He agreed, too!

I told her I'd send her the recipe, but she realized she'd never make it.  One day I'll bring it in mini muffins so they can freeze and eat when needed.

See... we got the GF world covered when you're enjoying hub-spectation! :-)  Just let us know when you need to step in in writing. ;-)

Peace and Joy!

I love reading every aspect of your blog: I would really like to do a triathlon at some point and getting an insight into how the pros race is really interesting for me.  Bummer about the flats though, but I admire your hubby's attitude a LOT.  I would have been sulking on the sidelines and putting banana skins in the other athletes' way ;)

Stephanie said...

GUT-WRENCHING! No!!! To be that amazingly awesome at something is spectacular to behold---and we can get food and recipes from lots of blogs. I like your food & recipes, too, of course, but I get goosebumps reading about the tri world. And--the heartbreak here. I'm betting it's almost as hard to be the cheering section as to be the main event!

YAY FOR SPABETTIE & BASIL! Love seeing you all together!

I love your attitude, Linds! I'm sorry for the turn of events with the flat tires - UGH! But so thankful to hear James' mental block was clear and his mind + body were really ready to race. I'm SO excited that you got to meet Kristina! I SO wish I could have been there to hang out with y'all...and Basil! :)

I'm sorry about the disappointing turn out but it sounds like you both made the best of it - and what a score on the reduced bike fee!

You two are amazing! So sorry things didn't go well, flat tires.. I can't imagine his frustration.  But his ability to stand and cheer the others on says so much about him!!!!!!!

I really should be asleep again, haha. West coast time is brutal! But had to say THANK U for always being there for us.
P.S.
Me and kristina so missed you!

That bike needs some flat-proof tires (well, don't they all)...!! How frustrating, but so awesome of him to cheer on the other racers as they came in. You guys make quite a {cute} Team!

This really makes me want to go see Portland...haven't been yet, but it's on the ever-growing list :)

Glad the highs outweight the lows... sometimes it's hard to loko on the bright side when things arent going perfectly!

Tell your hubbinator not to buy his tires from Play It Again Sports anymore ;) Ok, that joke is only funny if you know what that is! Ooor, it's not funny at all considering the luck he had. Although, I tend to believe he is just being primed for greatness. All these experiences are just buildup for the big deal race of the century. Ways to make him mentally more tough than he ever thought possible. And then POW! He annihilates the competition winning some HUGE stacks of money & gaining an even bigger name out there!

Shannon said...

aww, how impressive is that, a stand-up guy for sure, cheering his fellow competitors.  sometimes things are out of our control, though, so might as well focus on the highs!!

Holly said...

I'm sorry to hear about the tires :/ That blows...literally! But, he is a STAND UP guy for continuing to cheer on fellow athletes..that is hard to do, especially after what happened. Major props to him for doing that!
& that is awesome that you got some money off of the bike fee!!

believe it or not, I hung out at PLAY it AGAIN sports religously growing up!
haha. Oh the good old days. Thanks for your kind words Nellie.

Aww, you both are so sweet. I want to give you both a big hug! I loved watching the videos...I don't even really know James but I still get a kick out of hearing his name announced and seeing him come out of the water in SECOND place. I still can't believe it about the flats. Man:( And you definitely should NOT be posting about anything else...we all love feeling like we're involved in your lives in some small way. I would be so upset if I didn't hear how the race went. Like I said before, those are the blogs I like (which is why I love yours!:).

Also, DID YOU STEAL THE BANNER THIS TIME!! Come on!!;)

It was really great meeting you in person finally! You and James are adorable and are so kind. Wishing you guys the best, especially in the triathlon world, it's well-deserved :) And thanks for hunting us down at Henry's too! You had just missed the food fest of pizza and burgers (I was soooo bad lol).

lindsay cotter said...
