Taking my own Advice

The weekend has been a good time to slow down. In doing so, I realized a few days ago that I needed to remember those little “promises” I made. How did I realize this? With the help of a few blogger friends.
Last Tuesday I posted this on my Facebook Wall:
I will do this today! "Instead of focusing on a to-do list today, create a “to enjoy” list and check those things off instead."
Then come Wednesday, my good friend Heather posted THIS amazing post about making an Enjoy List. She posted it on Facebook too!
211655_591120846_2777636_q  Heather : “Also started a To-Enjoy List Challenge inspired by Lindsay Cotter?”
After my Friday post, my other good friend Kalli left me this comment.

“so sorry you had a tough week girl!  hang in and yes read some of YOUR posts.....they are very uplifting for sure.”

And that’s when it hit me. HARD! I thought to myself….

“Lindsay, wake up and practice what you preach, take your own advice, switch your FOCUS!”

Okay okay, I hear ya! And I can’t thank these ladies enough for making me realize that this weekend. Today I will remember my PROMISES and start making my ENJOY LIST!

This week I Enjoyed….

I feel as if I could go on forever with this list. All those little things really do add up. I’m sure glad I finally decided to take my own advice, it made for a very ENJOYABLE weekend.

What's the best advice you ever taken? Did you make your enjoy list?
Do it now if not!
Cheers,
LC

Congrats to all those who raced this weekend. Lots marathon runners, triathletes, and more! You guys know who you are.

Awesome! Sometimes it's easier to come up with some great advice for others, but we forget to take that advice ourselves. I am so glad you stopped to remember all those positives. You are so amazing and inspiring. (and thank you for the shout out.)

hmmm, the best advice i've ever taken?  my mom told me to stop wearing padded bras.  i mean, who was i kidding? :)  i'm glad that you're stopping to see the roses!  I don't make enjoy lists, but i do make "grateful" lists!  :)  i think i got the idea from oprah!

Hmm best advice..It is what it is.. and this too shall pass.  I love seeing your photos! I so hope one day to come and meet you  both!

I LOVE THIS. Your pics are amazing and totally tell the story. I am not sure if this counts as advice...but yesterday, Alicia who was running the marathon with me, came up at mile 23 and said "just remember that every step is one step further than you have ever gone." That just struck me and stuck with me for some reason...Before then I was wanting to walk the last hill, etc and then I realized just take it one step at a time and I will get there. I was actually able to enjoy and cherish the last 3 miles :) It has been a great weekend and more than anything I am just trying to enjoy every single second of my family being here! I have been thinking about your hubs this morning in his race and following your tweets on twitter! Hope he can finish strong!

I actually wrote a post about ups and downs of my week, and as I was writing it, more ups came to mind than downs.   I think writing the ups first was the key!   Keeping my finger crossed for the results!!

Yey for pup time, beer, great eats, runs, and time with family :)

Lindsay I don't think you're the only one who has a hard time practicing what she preaches, because we all have a hard time achieving everything we strive for. Just remember 'progress not perfection' :)

The list of things I'm doing this week while Nick is gone is kind of like my to enjoy list. As I'm not worrying about his job stuff at the moment (or at least it's easier not to when he's not here) I'm trying to focus a little more on my enjoyment! So far so good! :)

Bre said...

Great post friend, I'm happpy that you took some times this weekend after your crazy week to enjoy everything!  I'm terrible at taking my own advice! I'll take your advice and make that enoy list though!

I love this advice! I had so many moments of enjoyment this weekend. And I'm really going to enjoy some family time this afternoon before I pick up Billy at the airport tonight. Also enjoying the next couple of hours with nothing to do (read blogs & clean!) for the 1st time in ages. :)

Looks like you enjoyed wonderful things! I think the "To Enjoy" list is a great idea. It really puts things into perspective....sometimes the smallest things can be the happiest part of our days!

~Jessica~ said...

I haven't made a 'to enjoy' list as yet but I love the concept: I think I'll get right on that this evening.

The best piece of advice I (plan) on taking is to follow my dreams and go for a career that would make me happy, not one that would make the most amount of money.  I feel a weight off my shoulders just to hear that from someone and am being more proactive in trying to make it happen than ever before.

I'm so happy you took your own advice and had a lovely weekend!

Holly said...

Lindsay I love the idea of a "to enjoy" list -- I definitely need to keep my focus on how wonderful life is -- not how many things I need to do or what I am lacking. I am very blessed and I need to remember that!

Heather said...

I've decided to not do my cleaning today and enjoy a book.  Its cooler and rainy out - the perfect day for it!  The dirt will still be there tomorrow!

Aw, what a great weekend, Linds! I'm glad you were able to enjoy so much of it. The family and doggie pics are adorable. And yay for picking up the hubs! (PS, how cool is it that his name is on his shorts? Oh, the fun little things of being a pro:).

I did enjoy my weekend (time with the husband, which was much needed because he has been working long hours this week; time with friends; relaxing and watching a movie; some time outdoors in the nice weather; a nice meal out at a restaurant). Now I actually need to enjoy less and work on thesis MORE. Haha:).

Honestly some of the best advice of late has come from you - this whole "to enjoy" list is amazing. Between reading about it here and on Heather's blog, I"m focusing so much more on enjoying things everyday rather than seeing how much I can tick off my to-do list. You are very special ya know, you always leave quite the impression on me. I hope the rest of your weekend is amazing my dear!

jobo said...

So glad you are taking your own advice...because it's some of the best there is!! Sometimes it's really hard to do, I completely can relate to that, but you are doing it. Finding the little things to make you smile and realize that life, yeah, it's pretty darn good :) happy weekend (what's left of it!)

Molly Mcnamara said...

So glad you made time to enjoy the little things!!!  And even more to enjoy after that trip to the airport :)

Katie said...

I need to take your advice! I always make TONS of to do lists, and usually they are things that are not for my enjoyment. So, from now on, weekends especially, I will call it my To-Enjoy list. I should try to get all of my "work" done during the week, so that my weekends can be filled with enjoyment!

lindsay cotter said...

that sounds like a perfect idea Katie. Go for it next week and let me know how
it goes. Hope the knee is better.

Reading your enjoy list made me happy as well! :) You're so right: The things we could be happy about are around us all the time, but in the stress of daily life and sorrows we often don't see them anymore. This is why reffocusing and being mindful is so important, it's really a matter of attention.

The best advice I have ever been given is the "I get to," attitude.  Instead of thinking "I have to," think "I get to."  It makes you become more thankful for what you can do and what you are able to do rather then always thinking the negitive way of "I have to."  I love the idea of an enjoy list, I am going to have to make one this week!!

Running through sprinklers and hidden gem coffee shops are some of life's simplest joys. So glad you were able to enjoy them! <3

Otherwise, perhaps in August!

The best advice I've ever taken is to live in the moment. It sounds so cliche, but it's so important. I've wasted a lot of time worry about things that might happen or already happened, and ignoring what is important at the moment. I've missed out on a lot because of this and ever since I've taken this advice, life just has a lot more memorable moments!
