Feelin’ Fresh

G’day! <-------as my hubs would say. Hope you all had a great Easter weekend! Easter Sunday is probably our most dressed up time of year. And that’s not saying much, haha. But it was a nice change. I even put on jewelry and make-up, and I mean real makeup. Not just chapstick and mascara. That’s a big deal for this UNgirly girl.

Janae, I think you need to teach me how to dress and apply make up! haha.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The hubs looked so good that I might have to bribe him again to dress up. I am pretty sure a few of these will do the trick!
untitled
After church and Easter lunch, we decided to get some fresh air with the pups. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
You know you live in Texas when you take pictures of a Cactus.
But just look how pretty their flowers are?
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Spring time may bring a sense of renewal (aka spring cleansing), but Easter……..feels fresh. It’s like God is looking past all our little faults and allowing us to run free. Run free into FRESH air, FRESH hope, FRESH life.

I thought about how I might be needing FRESH approach to one area in my life, my habits. And it came down to this…..
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Yes, this is a table setting. It’s been neglected lately. Instead, its been replaced with meals in front of the TV, computer, in the car, multi-tasking, etc. Suddenly I’ve made meals convenient for my “busy” day instead of breaking to enjoy and savor them. Our table has not been used in weeks, instead my computer has food stuck on it (peanut butter, avocado, etc) and my couch has a few more ketchup stains. EEK!

So what's the big deal you might ask? I need REFRESH my GOOD habits and my MANNERS. It’s important to me to slow down, yet some where, some how I forgot how to do it.

My goal is to focus one meal a day.
  • One meal where there are no technological distractions.
  • One meal that is not rushed
  • One meal that is with good company or maybe by myself in a calming atmosphere.
  • One meal that is made FRESH.
My stubborn side wants nothing to do with this, while my body and mind are saying PLEASE TAKE TIME FOR US!
Maybe you will join me? Maybe you are already doing this?
Where do you need a FRESH approach?
    Cheers! LC
    p.s.
Here’s a custom Healthy Bite I made with a FRESH approach. VEGGIES! Recipe up soon.

Those healthy bites look awesome!!! You made them with veggies? Sounds wonderful to me already :-) and I'm totally with you on this challenge to take at least one meal to really relax, be with someone I love or by myself, at peace, with fresh wholesome food....definitely could use a meal like that once a day! It is so easy to get super caught up in a busy lifestyle

Sable@SquatLikeALady said...

Great post!! In the mad rush of finals I've been eating a lot of convenient meals, not necessarily RELAXING/enjoyed meals and I definitely need to change that! I appreciate my food so much more when I can slow down to enjoy it.

Heather (Where's the Beach) said...

I was just thinking last night that we needed to get into the habit of having dinner at the table. We used to do that at least once a week. Of course, last night we had a good excuse to be in front of the tv - had to watch the storms and make sure we didn't need to take cover.

Vanessa @ Gourmet Runner said...

Great topic! I eat way too many meals in front of the computer or with the Tv on in the background. I'm with you to try to eat one meal a day without distractions from technology. Just me, my food (ok, and maybe my hubs!). Thanks for inspiring me!
:)

Erin Stratton said...

What a great idea! I really want to get into this habit myself plus it would be nice if we could start a good habit of this with the baby....especially without the dang TV on lol
I love cactus blooms, we have no shortage of them out in West Texas for sure. Also the roses in peoples yard this time of year look fantastic and the honeysuckle is out in full force so the smells that hit you while running are wonderful :)

Lynn Ong said...

I love the idea of focusing on your meals! Definitely jumping onto this bandwagon :) I rush through too many of my meals. No bueno

Julia said...

I love this idea and definitely agree that Easter does feel just really fresh and a lot like a new beginning. It is starting to get warm out, new flowers, animals, etc are out...There is just a lot out there to enjoy and to start looking forward to--I think this is good but it seems that it is also easy for me to get ahead of myself at this point...my mind starts racing to weeks from now or my next vacation, pool day, etc. I think the way I can stay refreshed is by reminding myself to continue to stay in the moment...appreciating each day as they come...even the still super cold ones we have here in Utah :) GREAT POST :) Thanks for sharing and I love the pics!

Olivia said...

omg I can't WAIT for that recipe! Whatever those little balls are they look like pure heaven! Love the idea to have at least one meal slowed down and enjoyed each day; we're all so busy sometimes that we forget to nourish ourselves with proper and fun meals with good friends and family! Have a great Tuesday!

Trisha said...

You look so cute! I'm right there with ya...mascara and chapstick are about all I do. Other than Sundays when I go to church and I try to dress up more. I try to make a habit of just eating when I eat. I always would rather study (or read blogs), but I think it is important to just eat and let your body take it in! Good advice :)

Sabrina @ Radioactive Runner said...

I think that's a great goal you've made and totally doable!!
I try to do the same thing.. to relax while eating and actually ENJOY the food I'm eating. I think when I do this I end up eating less too.
You're right.. your body and mind will thank you :)

audrey said...

UGH!!! glad to see someone else who's dining furniture is neglected. our cats use our dining table and breakfast nook more than we do!!
i will join you in the goal to acutally sit at the table for 1 meal a day.
no computer, no tv, no paper...just me, my hubs and food (the cats will probably join us to!)

Jenny Mendez said...

Cadbury egg!! I'm surprised you have more, mine was demolished ;)
I do the same thing when I eat and I definitely need to focus on not having so many distractions around me.

Matt said...

I eat every single meal on the computer. LOL.

Bre said...

aww what a lovely easter day! I like that fresh goal my friend- I think I need to take more time with meals too. I don't even have a kitchen table! ;) ah the student life! But I do take some time for me in a week which is hot yoga time :)

Christine said...

LOVE this. I ate my breakfast in the car, and I'm sure I'll be eating lunch in front of the computer. Guess I need to plan to slow down for dinner!

Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) said...

Sounds like a great Easter! The boys each got one of those eggs...hello sugar! I am totally with you on this. We are definitely taking the time to refresh...my favorite right now is sitting on the patio, eating dinner and just chatting with my family.

Holly said...

We've been making an effort to eat more meals at the table as well -- usually breakfast is totally rushed, eating standing up or in the car and the same happens with dinner! We've been doing better with turning the tv OFF, but I know we can do more. It is just so much more relaxing to eat, talk, etc at the dinner table!

Lauren @ WWoB said...

Lindsay, you just gave me hardcore AUSTIN pangs. I miss. Wait...... I just realized, I am going to be there all this weekend! LETS MEET UP!!! Its my step sisters wedding!
Also, while I applaud you in your effort to have a few more focused meals a week, I think you can let yourself off the hook this time! You are like superwoman. Your couch has probably been missing your tush terribly for months.

Dairyfreebetty said...

I need to do that too!! It's amazing how something as little as sitting in front of the tv can change the way you eat. When I sit at the table I savor my food, and enjoy it. TV I eat it fast, and usually want more!! Good idea!!

jobo said...

Cute pic, you look fantastic, as always! And I love your one-meal-mantra. So so good. I am feeling the itch to completely change up my eating routine. I've been feeling sort of down and out on myself and wonder if a change to my eating patterns for a few weeks, a healthy detox of sorts is the right way to go...thoughts?? Long comment, but your menus and eating always get me thinking.

Jill said...

You are pretty :-)

Holley Theodore said...

First, your hair looks super cute! Setting the table and sitting down to eat REALLY makes things so much more enjoyable. I agree. I really enjoy sitting down and eating without any distractions from anything, with peace and quiet and just enjoying my meal and letting my mind wander. I think it kills Ben sometimes because I eat so slow, haha. What can I say, I like to enjoy my food! :)

Kate Horning said...

I need to do the same thing I feel like im always eating on the go and its so bad for you meals should be the time you are quiet and just focus in on your day.

hungryrunnergirl said...

YOU ARE WAY TOO NICE....Girl, I NEED YOU TO TEACH ME!!! You look STUNNING....seriously, please do a vlog about your hair and make-up routine and remember how you still look like a model with just chapstick and mascara. I am obsessed with your look. I NEEDED this post because I do the same thing and seriously I have pb and avocado on my computer and bbq sauce on my couch....oops!! Hope you don't mind if I copy your goals:) I hope you are having an amazing day and thanks for making me feel good:) LOVE YOU!!!

Gen said...

Can't wait for the recipe! :D
What an awesome goal!!! We eat on the run too.....but my favorites are always when we're sitting together as a family!

Holly said...

We always eat in front of the tv. I mean we sit at the table, but the tv is always on. I think we should also try to allow at least a night of NO technology, what so ever! I think it's a great thing!! I love when I happen to 'forget' my cell phone sometimes, it's so relieving :)

Niki Kenney said...

I love love love Janae and her style- but you're GORGEOUS. You don't need help in any department!!!

I need to get away from technology during meals too. Booo.

Aww you look soooo perty in that pic...not that you aren't always perty my dear, makeup or no makeup! :-)
I got into the habit of not eating at the table for awhile a couple of years ago - and suddenly the hubs and I weren't even talking about our day or anything over dinner, just eating mindlessly while watching tv. how sad, right? So now we make a habit of never eating in front of the TV, computer, etc. and spending that 30 mins catching up with eachother. It makes a world of a difference.

You are stunning with or without makeup! =) But it is fun once in awhile to get dressed up. I really like the whole cutting out technology approach. Personally I hate when I start to feel *too* connected. I like my me time with just me and the hubs. Quiet no distractions. I think its really important so we can talk and focus on each other. During the day its ok because well thats my job and there are things I enjoy alot (like blogging!) but at night I try to turn it all off and unwind. I love that picture of you. So pretty! :) And I'm the same when it comes to make-up - mascara, a bit of rouge, and that's it. When I go out, I may use some eyeshadow as well. I'm ver un-girly. ;)

I started to arrange the table nicely when I began mindful eating. I don't do it for every meal, though (but I try to eat every meal mindfully, which can also mean sitting outside on my door sill with a bowl and a fork, or chopsticks :D). I love how arranging the table immediately changes the atmosphere of a meal and makes it something special.

first you do not need any help to look good, you look great make up or no make up. I am in the no make up ungirly club myself. The meal in front of the TV...ah good one..I do not let my kids eat in front of the TV. Nothing is on when we eat. the only one in our family who eats in front of the TV is my husband. He comes home too late to eat with us so he always ends up on the sofa in front of the TV. For me Quiet time is only at night..cup of tea and a book or magazine...even if it is just 15 minutes it is worth it :)

My family had lots of flaws, but one thing my mom was always adamant about was that we always meet around the dinner table as a family every night. It was a great habit to have. So now, with the exception of Friday nights (pizza and a movie, so we watch in front of the big screen), our little family gathers around our dining room table and eats our meal together while we talk about our day. :)

Great post, Lindsay! I grew up with a mom and dad that insisted we never ate in front of the TV, and looking back on it, I love all of my family dinners and all the good laughs/conversations/times we had. I always said I wanted to keep that tradition going, but now that it's just my husband and I (or often just me, since he works later hours and I sometimes am too hungry to wait for him to get home, lol), we find ourselves eating in front of the TV or computer a LOT. I am going to try and join you on this one!!:) I also ate WAY too much junk food over the Easter weekend, so I need to REFRESH my good eating habits. Hoping to get back on track this week, but the stress of grad school finals has not been helping! Can I just hire you to plan all my meals for me? Your WIAW posts are making me really envious!;)

Oh happy day. It looks like my comment is going to go through. I had to use Internet Explorer yesterday instead of Mozilla (virus something...) and it wouldn't load this form on your blog! First of all, you are so beautiful all dressed up for Easter Sunday. I'm sure James feels that same way about you as you did him. Billy and I are so rarely dressed up, but it's fun every now & then! I mentioned in my email, but I think it is so important to take time to sit down and have a proper dinner without electronics. It's sort of the equivalent to me as reading before bed...or just talking to Billy, rather than staring at my glowing laptop screen. I'm excited to see your recipe for veggie healthy bites!

Yep, that's something we all neglect here and there Lindsay. I have been known to eat in front of the computer and TV myself. There's something to intentional eating that's for sure! Have a wonderful season of renewing!!

I think thats what technology has done to us these days, making us less mindful
of our eating. I am guilty of that! Time to change that.

that is exactly my story too! Now that my hubs trains at odd hours and works, it
hard t wait. Last night I ate a little then saved the rest for the table with
him when he got home. It was perfect!!

YAY! It works! You and Billy have ALWAYS been a good role model for us. I want
to take more picnics now and just "be still" with our meals together. Thank you
friend. And really, WE MUST TALK SOON! Dying here! haha.

You don't need makeup! You are just gorgeous!!! I love your goals. We don't watch TV, but the computer gets a lot of use by me at mealtime. Working on it... Breakfast is family time. I'd love to make it our regular devotions time too. Consistency and discipline needed!! Have a great day, L!

When J is home, we always sit down to eat and have real conversations. But when I'm living on my own (like now), I pretty much always eat in front of the computer. I know that it's a bad habit...but it's just so BORING to eat in silence by yourself! I need to read or be on the computer.

my husband came home late tonight but I still sat by myself with some music on
instead of the TV or computer. Trust me, it was lovely. I thought it would be
boring too, but we so programmed to go go go then taking a moment to eat felt
guilty. As soon as I took a bite of food and tasted all those flavors, I let go
of the guilt and let more time pass by just enjoying it. what a relief!

I can't tell you the last time I applied makeup! And any day I blow dry my hair is a special occasion! :) Sounds like you guys had a great Easter!

I'm bad about meals. Thanks for the gentle reminder that I might need to work on that! :)

fantastic post!!! I have been working very hard on three things... eat when hungry, eat consciously and then stop when I'm full! I never realized just how distracted I was when eating
