Reoccurring Eights

Word of the week is BURRRR!!! I’m a Texas and Hawaii Girl, below 65F and I am cold. This artic chll with 4 degree temps is just not cool (no pun intended). You see, yesterday our great state decided to not tell us about the rolling blackouts they were conducting, so we got stuck without power all day. Even my work was out of power. No teaching class, no training run, no getting warm, not even baking! Oh well. Not the best situation, but whatch gonna do?

We decided to head out and look for warmth. Luckily the hot yoga studio was open, score! I could have stayed in that room all day! After my mini sweat and stretch, I basically put my sweats and beanie back on and waited for power.

Hey, I can make light of the situation, right?

Anyway, now on to the number 8. I realized today, this number has been the theme around here the past few days.

EIGHT IS:
  • the number of hours our power was out
  • the wind chill degree yesterday (ya, that’s cold for us southerners)
  • the number of places we went to escape the cold.
  • the hours of sleep I got last night bundled up under layers of blankets
  • the time of morning I actually got to the gym today, yea!
  • the number of speed sets I did the treadmill
  • the number of miles I ran
  • the minutes I spent afterwards working on core/strength
  • the time of night I am actually writing this.
Pretty cool, eh? So I shall pass on my theme of eights with this workout. Adjust as needed, even great for stair climbing, power walking, elliptical, etc.

Your Speed Eights Sets:

Warm up 7-10 minutes

  • 1 minute Half Marathon pace, 90 seconds recovery run/walk, 1 minute 10k race pace, 90 seconds recovery. (REPEAT 2-3x)
  • 1 minute 10k race pace, 90 second recovery run/walk, 1 minute 5k race pace, 90 second recovery run/walk. (REPEAT 2-3x)
  • 1 minute 5k race pace, 90 second recovery run/walk, 1 minute fast mile pace, 90 second recovery run/walk. (REPEAT 1-2x). this one should leave you wiped!
Cool down 5-10 minutes easy.

I ended up doing 3x, 3x, 2x= 8x! SWEAT was on. I think it was because the hubs was next to me on the treadmill doing speed work too. I like to think I can get as fast as him sometimes, haha!

Now if that wasn’t enough, I decided to 8 minutes of power or as my hubs calls it, 8 minutes of pain.
Phew, that was tough but felt good. Looking forward to an easy spin tomorrow and a nice meal with the family for my mama’s bday!
mom
Ain’t she pretty?!

What's your number theme this week, if any? Do you have a story to tell about this artic blast? Do tell!

Stay warm out there.

Cheers!
LC
p.s.
tomorrow I will announce the Amazing Grass winner. One day left, sweet!

Through this winter blast, I have just tried to stay positive, energized, and motivated. Even my clients have been sluggish and cranky. It's been a challenging week, but almost done and hoping the sun decides to visit us a little bit more next week! :)

Brrr it did get chilly there!!! When It's that cold I go run in it... that warms me up nicely :)

8 must be your number. I have a tendency ro look at the clock at 3:33. It's creepy. Now my mom texts me when she catches the clock at that time too. I think I'll die at 3:33 some day.

Your mom is beautiful..and you inherited her good looks :)

I'm a Arizona/ Hawaii girl myself so I can't even begin to handle the weather. I feel ya. and I was dreaming of hot yoga all day!

You are too cute in your hat! I don't think I've been fully defrosted for a couple of days. My hands and feet are sort of numb and it's hard for me to be productive - I think my brain is frozen! I did manage to do my run on the treadmill yesterday and I'll do my speedwork on the treadmill in the morning, but I REALLY want sunshine and warmer temps. The forecast look good for Saturday here so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

lindsay cotter said...

gotta love the beanie!! So warm!

lindsay cotter said...

girl, I should have come to you house! I know you would have fed me good food too!

Brrrr! I am with you on the cold. We had a two-hour delay today because of it...and one tomorrow because of the fear of snow! I thought I had escaped this when I move here to Austin...but at least my family got a good laugh about me having a "cold" day rather than a "snow" day. :)

That is a great workout! Love it!

Not too cold to some other standards I guess...in the 20's here but we were in the teens last night. yes, night, not day like you guys. i'm with you on the cold though; Cali girl to the heart! I hate anything below 65 too!

Your mom is so pretty! (as are you- gorgeous in your wedding photo!). 8 hrs of sleep!? Lucky you!!

Shockingly although we aren't having a blizzard in Palm Springs, it will get very chilly- below freezing tonight!

Ah gah that is cold for down there! It has been super cold here in CO too. Loved the pictures and your workout is inspiring. I need to do something that I get a good sweat from tomorrow, speed work it is :-) I also love coincidences such as your day of 8's!

Carrie said...

HAHAAH ahh that is so freaky with 8's!!!!! i am SUPER DUPER superstitious so there is definitely something going on there...;)

It does sound really cold!!!!! It snowed the day before our return to Brazil, and we were worried that we might get stuck in an airport! =P
That workout sounds super hard, but I bet you feel awesome afterwards!!!!

I've heard such great things about the benefits of hot yoga -- but the idea of it sort of freaks me out, like I might faint or something. Any tips for the first class, besides lots of water and having an empty belly?

Heather (Where's the Beach) said...

Oh love that interval. Sorry your power was out - that totally sucks. Our windchill was 6 degrees - so I guess I should come up with sixes for yesterday. I did 6 gentle pickups...

mamarunsbarefoot said...

my number this week is 40. It was -40 and this is the coldest I've seen in about 8 years. And alas I've turned 40.. Beautiful photo!!!

Tina Reale said...

I couldn't imagine going without power in that cold. Yikes! I'm with you that below 60 is cold to me too.

Jess said...

Brr! Even I think that' scold - especially with the rolling blackouts! That is ridiculous!! I love your "8s" series, how very cool. NICELY done on that workout! I'm aiming for speed tomorrow, wish me luck ;-)

Can I count reading your workout, as mine?? ;-) Ironically, I just glanced over to your blog list, and the "Life in Lane Eight" caught my eye... crazy!! I can't believe San Antonio [and Austin as well] got snow!! Ridiculous! Enjoy the weekend. And yes, I've got chilly weather stories - in the form of 7 blog posts already down for the month of February... eek!

Yikes!!! It was super cold here yesterday: -5 degrees!! But at least my family had our power. A lot of other people's went out- same with gas and electricity! What a great idea you had to go to hot yoga!

Danggg I could never be on a treadmill that long! Impressive!
Bummer about the power outage... I despiseee it when that happens, and at my house its like once a week! I cant cook!!

those speed sets look so tough but so fun :-) I built a snowman with my roommate and neighbors and their son haha it was a blast!

marathonmaiden said...

no stories. probably for the best :)

and i love the number 8. mostly because it's a multiple of 4 and 4 is my lucky number

Lisakthrives said...

I love number patterns :)
I have this weird thing that whenever I look at a clock or speedometer (or something where the numbers change), and it happens be exactly on a multiple of 10 (ends in 0)...I know I'm exactly in the right place at the right time, doing what I'm supposed to be doing. It started 3 years ago, and for some reason I get so much reassurance out of that!

I can't believe yalls power was out for 8 hours!!! Not cool!

Holly said...

A new workout to try!!!!!!!!!!!! YES :) Printing it off now! Thank you for sharing- I just love them!
So glad you guys finally got power back- I cannot believe it was out for EIGHT hours- yikes!! I'm a southern girl too (been in FL for all 24 years of my life :) ) & that is just WAY too cold!

Sounds like one of my favorite workouts - running & core work. I always do 1 min speed - 1 min jog/walk, repeat. Jump squats are awesome, as well as jump lunges, but those kill me!

Missy Miller said...

I've been so feeling for you Austin folks...
Man. I had to get out of there, but remember in time slike this all the awesome stuff about living in Austin. I've been in a tanktop and shorts and flip flops for weeks (pretty much all year?) HOWEVER...we don't have that Austin magic here.
Four words: ELECTRIC BLANKET, LAPTOP, BOOK.
