Lessons Learned

Do you ever have one of those days/weeks when every decision turns into a lesson? Kinda the trial and error in life, right? But it’s the little things you think sound right (at the time) which later build character. Why? Maybe because you learn your lesson. haha!

Lesson 1:

  • When driving on a 2 way street on almost Empty, do not pass GO the one and only gas station, thinking you will make it home no prob. A random traffic back up on a Saturday can cause you to sweat bullets while waiting for that EMPTY light to go on. (I did make it…..barely).

Lesson 2:

  • Do not believe that Texas has a Spring. Nope, not at all. We went from winter to Summer in a blink of an eye. Do not think that you can run in the afternoon with 90 plus degree temperatures and a sun that’s reflecting the pavement like no other. That’s just silly.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Lesson 3:

  • Don’t under estimate the value of a dollar!! We’re trying to budget our grocery shopping these days and when you find something organic for a $1, you go for it! Thanks Helen’s Kitchen 4 organic chicken tofu steaks for 99 cents!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Blue Cornmeal Crusted Spicy BBQ Tofu Steaks

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Ingredients:
  • cut and pressed organic tofu or tofu steaks (I used Helen’s Kitchen Brand)
  • 2/3 cup organic blue cornmeal (yellow cornmeal can also be used)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • paprika, garlic, black pepper
  • 1 egg
Super easy Directions:
Crack egg in bowl, whisk in oil. In a separate bowl mix your cornmeal and spices. Coat each steak in egg batter then dust in cornmeal mix. Place on a baking sheet (greased) and bake at 400F for 10 minutes on each side. You might have to season a little more between flipping. Then broil for 2 to 3 minutes on each side again to make it extra crispy. Just depends on the strength setting of your broiler. Remove from oven and drizzle with spicy BBQ sauce.

So tell me, what lessons have you learned lately? I might need to know for future reference! haha.

Cheers,
LC

Here is a lesson I learned: don't say yes to helping a friend move till you see how much stuff they have ;)

Plus not all air mattresses are created equally!

Heather said...

I've had a similar gas incident - my car says how many miles until you stop moving. I was on 0 - yelling at my husband who said I could make it home without a problem.

I've learned to savor the few days off I have this month - May will be here soon (but not soon enough).

*Listening is often better than chatting.

*Strawberries make the best snack during yoga teacher training!

*Always, always, always listen to your intuition!

*If someone is on your mind in the morning, pray for understanding!

*It's okay to say, "I've done all I can on this, someone else needs to take over" or other such matter on a group project.

*Hard swedish fish will eventually become soft if given enough mouth time. (Learned at yesterday's Bull Run Run 50m...)

*It's best to write things down and ask questions when sorting ultra finishers' jackets, because after being awake since 3 am, the brain may not function properly!

*Always go to the bathroom before leaving- even if your next stop is only a "short distance" away (kind of like the gas piece).

*Always have extra food on hand when driving home from yoga teacher training (it can always become the next day's lunch afterall).

*Trust and be gentle with yourself.

Girl I had a similar run yesterday and learned that I am going to have to learn to run with a fuel belt and take in electrolytes much sooner when it's hot like that. But at the same time, I realized that I can be pretty darn tough ;-)

Stephanie@MyThornsHaveRoses said...

Thanks for the tips! I'm off for a run right now. I often try to run IN the heat (weirdo) because I love the feel of hot and sweaty. BUT...not usually my fastest times and I'm hoping to increase the speed so it's now or never. I am so ashamed to admit that no matter how many times I've been VERY CLOSE to running out of gas I still tell myself I'll get somewhere. Ryan HATES it. It's probably up there with the top 2 pet peeves he has about me. :) :) :) I don't know why, but for some reason I despise pumping gas.

Christina said...

Hahaha love that video. So true! I've been to Texas in the summertime and it was a sauna. You can't get instant relief under shade!

Lesson learned: Don't assume mom will wake you up for school when your alarm clock doesn't work. Yikes!

Erin Stratton said...

I feel you on that lesson #1...I am the Queen of just one more mile gas tank COME ON YOU CAN DO IT! Not unlike what I do during my runs lol

I want to try more tofu recipies so thanks for an easy one. We are having stir fry this week with tofu so I am pumped!

Lately I have learned that sprinklers in my neighborhood go off between 6-8 in the morning so runs need to be scheduled during that time as much as possible so I can run through the sprinklers :)

Dorry said...

Love you, friend! I always love your videos - makes me miss you even more! I've learned a lot of lessons in marriage lately - some hard, some wonderful, all worth it.

Jess said...

Your video is a riot!! And those pics - you can just TELL you are DYING from the heat. Man, I would melt, I am sure of it. You are crazy for getting out there in that! But then again, that's why I love ya! ;-) My lesson learned? That it's high time I got my running legs back, and the only way to do that is to run, baby, run!

Geek Turned Athlete said...

haha. You do not look like a happy camper!! I hate the humidity, and I'm lucky to live somewhere where it is low. Otherwise, I would have a pretty good fro happening! Unfortunately, it is still cold out. I'm hoping to be able to ride my bike outside for the first time this week!

Shannon said...

I am not looking forward to the time when it's 90 degrees, 100% humidity by 10 in the morning! And I am so bad about gas. I live about 25 miles from the nearest gas station, so unless I have some other reason to go into town I don't get gas... I've held my breath driving to and from work, THEN into town hoping for enough gas many times!

A lesson I'm learning: If someone talks trash about you and is hateful to you, just deal with it, they'll end up getting theirs in the end and you'll end up with a 50% higher tip off of one of their tables just for talking to that table and taking care of their bill for them.

Also, just thinking "I can do this!" has some serious power!

Salah said...

I learned not to run outside in the heat as well....I died lol soooo hot!

lindsay cotter said...

seriously! What happened to cool crisp air for spring? sheesh.

question: does skim milk powder make a good sub for protein powder??

your thoughts lindsay...and anyone else.

I ran 13.1 in that same weather today... it was HARD! We do have a spring but it's only for about a week... in February.

The video was too cute! No spring in Texas, thats for sure! I learned that sometimes you just have to do what you don't want to...just because something is comfortable and what you are used to doesnt mean its right! Hope that made sense ;) Wishing you a great start to the week!

Katie :)

S @ extremebalance.net/blog said...

You can drive for SO LONG on empty!! :) Tried, tested and true--I was driving through the central stretch of BC, where it starts to look like the desert... and I *thought* I could make it to small town X. I don't even remember which one... because I didn't make it!! But I drove on empty for what felt like an eternity until I made it to some TEENY tiny town, with knots in my stomach (since I had no cell service either), and was thereafter very impressed that my little car didn't fail me. Let's hear it for some serendipity...

We used to say the same thing about Montreal--from too cold to too hot, and no in between. Everything's relative, right? Happy week!

AdrienneHJensen said...

What do you mean 90 degrees isn't great to run in? Here in Phoenix we wait for it to cool down to 90 degrees to run :) Of course you must take lots and lots of water and know your pace will be slower. The rest of the world is dethawing and we are coming out of 70-80 degree weather and gearing up for 120's eeek.

I've so Been there with the gas tank thing though....haven't run out yet.

Totally have done number 1 a million times! I learned some lessons on fueling and recovery from a long ride today. Did a morning ride (69 miles woop) then went to do my run later on... Felt awesome! Then totally bonked at like 4.5 miles... but it was really weird- just like sever over heating? I could still elliptical, but I was done running for sure

Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) said...

Aww haha poor you on that run!! That video made me laugh!! I'm impressed that you managed a run- I probably would've collapsed in the first mile! :P I learned the important lesson of why you shouldn't procrastinate. I put off packing until the very last minute, and forgot my toothbrush! Typical me!

By the way, LOVED the hearts and souls in your last post!! Just saw it, and it made my morning!! Everyone has such BEAUTIFUL hearts, and I love you so much for showing this to the world:)

Lisakthrives said...

What a great bargain on the tofu! I feel like my most recent lesson is still in the works...I need to learn how to say no to people and jobs when I don't have time for them. So---being selective is my lesson! Getting in touch with what I actually want to do rather than just saying yes to everything because it was offered.
Hope you had a nice cool refreshing drink after your sweaty run! It may get to 70 today in NY, and people are over the moon about it :)

Those pics of you grimacing are awesome, and the video, hahah! I live in Virginia, so I know all about the heat and humidity. Disgusting.

Lessons.

1. When you have a 4 year old child, always look at the steps you are walking on, because there is probably a matchbox car on at least one of them, and it's guaranteed you will step on it.
2. Don't buy things you have never tried before at COSTCO in BULK. You will almost certainly not like them and end up throwing that $20 away.

I have a feeling that when we get through with winter here that we're going to do the same thing....straight to summer. Yuck! It's hard for me to even imagine 90 degree weather right now with snow still on the ground!
At least you still got out there and got it done! And I'm glad you didn't run out of gas!
Lessons? I would say that when something needs being done, do it right then. Because if you don't you'll most likely forget about it and then really pay for it later. I had a receipt that needed to be reimbursed, stuck it in my pocket, forgot about it, and then I'm sure I washed it. This was two weeks ago and I thought of it this morning while lying in bed. :(

jessiepants said...

1. Don't underestimate spring in the Butte - come wind, come snow, come what may.
2. Listen to my body

Oh God. I have had so many close calls with running out of gas....when I was moving here (Montana) from Texas I had to drive through Wyoming. I had no idea just how desolate that state was... I had no cell phone service, my empty light was on, I didn't see a state trooper in the entire state, and I literally drove 100 miles before I got to a gas station. I was crying while I filled up, I was so relieved I made it! :)
